A Legacy Written in Three Generations

The Family That Never Left Sankuru

Dr. Paul Law wound up in Sankuru for a simple reason: he was raised there. The Law family’s covenant with Sankuru’s children began in 1950, when his grandfather, Burleigh Law, answered a call to serve with the Methodist Church — and built a hospital that still stands today.

In 1964, rebel soldiers shot him three times. He was carried to his own hospital, where, before he died, he forgave his killer and prayed for his unborn grandchildren and the Tetela people he had given his life to serve.

His children returned. His son served for over 40 years, and is buried beside his father near the Wembo Nyama Hospital. And his grandson — Dr. Paul Law MD, MPH, MS — traded four degrees from Johns Hopkins and a brilliant American career to come home permanently in December 2022.
